Skull of Felis catus. From specimen collector Hubert Ludwig’s book Schul-Naturgeschichte (School of Natural History), 1891.

Under it all, though, cat eyes and human eyes have a lot in common. The genes that control eye development in humans and cats are homologous, meaning they exist in both animals because they originated in a common ancestor. A primary reason the cat genome project started in the first place was because its subject, a purebred Abyssinian named Cinnamon, came from a long line of cats that suffered from a genetic vision loss called retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which also affects humans. Isolating this genetic locale in Cinnamon has helped RP researchers get closer to a cure.
